Artist Statement

Like most artists my life as an artist started out as a young boy doing still-life drawings. At that time I had no concept of art or where it was taking me, I only knew I enjoyed it. Fifteen years later I found myself in college enrolled in a graphic design degree program. My artwork is a reflection of myself and my experiences. Dreams, feelings, and my state of mind influence my designs. This for example I have depicted in my series, Escape. This series which consists of nine pieces all together depicts human emotions. I would describe the images to be “dream-like” in the paintings. They show feelings of being trapped, falling apart, fading, and being stripped or torn apart.

I have been influenced by Bauhaus art and designers such as Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast. My designs are focused on form more than content. I am more concerned about the layout in the design and how it comes together structurally than the images depicted or what the type says. My geometrical form of design can be only explained by my study of engineering. Part of engineering deals with machines and there moving parts. These moving parts have basic functions. Parts have to be designed with respect to mathematics and physics. Therefore, to maximize efficiency, functionality, durability, and strength these parts have to be of geometric shape. This application also went in to the design of larger structures such as houses, bridges, and cranes. The exposure to these studies made me attracted to the Bauhaus style.

Currently I am experimenting with the mark-making technique and working on creating some abstract images from this experiment to incorporate in my graphic design work. I hope this will unlock another interpretation of the human psyche.
